Abdominal organs

Intestinal gases << >> Adhesions

Besides the intestines, there are other organs in the abdomen that take up more or less space. Most of them are above or below the typical measurement point for the waist circumference. However, they can contribute to the waist circumference if they are enlarged and move the intestine towards the middle of the abdomen.

Enlargements of the abdominal organs are usually undesirable or the result of an illness, apart, of course, from pregnancy.

Stomach

The stomach can be enlarged by regular overfilling. In people who eat very large meals, the stomach is usually considerably enlarged. That's why these people don't get enough to eat fast enough and are still really hungry after normal large meals. Hunger is mainly controlled by the filling of the stomach.

Due to the large meals, an enlarged stomach is in most cases associated with considerable overweight. The large stomach contributes to the waist circumference, but is then usually accompanied by plenty of fat in and outside the abdomen.

An enlarged stomach requires tedious training with the help of small meals. While the stomach shrinks, those affected are usually very hungry. In an optimal case, the shrinking process takes about two months.

If you cannot shrink your stomach with small meals, you have the option of having your stomach surgically reduced. However, such an operation is not always paid for by the insurance companies. In addition, there are of course the usual surgical risks. Therefore, gastric reductions are usually only performed when the obesity is very high and a change in diet does not help.

Liver

The liver, located under the right costal arch, is a relatively large organ.

Some people have an enlarged liver. It is then called fatty liver.

Usually overweight is the cause of such an enlargement. Chronic alcohol abuse can also cause liver enlargement. In rare cases, liver enlargement can also have other causes.

An enlarged liver can increase the waist circumference by a few centimetres. However, this is not the main problem with an enlarged liver, but the enlargement of the liver itself.

Therefore, in the case of an enlarged liver, follow the doctor's recommendations and, for example, change the diet or reduce the use of alcohol, depending on the cause of liver enlargement. It's the only way the liver can recover.

Spleen

The spleen is an organ in the abdominal cavity whose importance is foreign to most people. Although the spleen is part of the immune system and performs important tasks in this context, humans can survive without the spleen. It is located above and behind the stomach.

When the spleen is enlarged, it is called a spleen tumor. This term is also used when there is no tumour in the usual sense, but simply an enlargement of the spleen.

Such an enlargement of the spleen can have many causes. This is usually caused by a disease, such as infection, inflammation or even leukaemia.

If the spleen is enlarged, the cause of this enlargement should definitely be found out. Then the underlying disease should be treated carefully.

The spleen does not normally have a strong effect on the waist circumference, even with an enlargement, because it is a rather small organ. Only with very strong splenomagnification the abdominal girth would increase noticeably.

Pancreas

The pancreas produces a lot of digestive juices. She's lying across the stomach. Its passage leads into the duodenum, where it releases the digestive juices.

Enlargements of the pancreas are rare. They take the form of benign cysts or malignant tumors.

If a pancreatic cyst is very large, you can sometimes feel it from the outside. However, such a size is not the normal case, even in the presence of pancreatic cysts.

The pancreas does not normally make a significant contribution to the waist circumference, only its normal, small size.

Kidneys

The two kidneys are located in the back of the abdomen near the spine.

These important organs can fall ill in many ways, but an enlargement of the kidney is normally not associated with this.

In rare cases, there are people with an additional kidney. Of course, such a third kidney would increase the abdominal girth. But it's very rare.

Like the pancreas, the kidney can also contract cysts or cancer. In both cases, this new formation would result in a more or less pronounced enlargement of the kidney. However, a significant abdominal enlargement is only rarely a consequence of these diseases.

Womb

The uterus in the lower abdomen grows naturally when a woman is pregnant. After a birth, the uterus is enlarged for weeks because it is only gradually receding.

But even without pregnancy, the uterus can often be enlarged. Myomas, which are benign tumours of the uterus, occur in relatively many women over the course of their lives.

Small fibroids often do not cause any discomfort and even larger specimens often remain unnoticed for a long time. However, myomas can also manifest themselves in particularly severe bleeding or pain.

If a myoma has become very large, it can have a noticeable effect on the abdominal girth. Surgical removal is often the most successful solution for particularly large fibroids or complaints.

The uterus can also develop cancer. However, it only grows so strongly in a very advanced stage that the abdominal girth is clearly influenced by it. Before that, there are usually other complaints such as bleeding or pain.

Ovaries

The ovaries are also located in the lower abdomen, directly above the uterus.

They are so small that they do not play a role even with a slight enlargement for the abdominal girth.

But relatively often benign cysts form on the ovaries. These cysts are also usually very small. But sometimes the cysts grow from month to month. In rare cases they can grow up to football size.

Such large cysts naturally drive up the stomach quite considerably. When an ovarian cyst has become so large, surgical removal is usually a sensible method of treatment. Smaller cysts usually disappear by themselves or after hormonal treatment.

Like the other abdominal organs, the ovaries can also become cancerous. Ovarian cancer, however, is very rare.

Prostate

In men, the prostate is located in the lower abdomen.

Older men often suffer from prostate enlargement, which impairs urinary flow.

But even an enlarged prostate is still so small that it does not enlarge the abdominal girth significantly.

The same applies to prostate cancer.

Bladder

The bladder is at the bottom of the pelvis. Due to their regular filling with urine and its excretion, their size is subject to strong fluctuations.

When heavily filled, the urinary bladder can contain up to one litre or more of fluid. This amount of fluid has a self-evident effect on the abdominal girth.

Therefore, it makes sense to measure the abdominal girth always with the bladder empty, then you have uniform values.
